Secondary Production and Organic Matter Processing by Collector Macroinvetebrates in a Desert Stream
نویسندگان
چکیده
Secondary production (measured as dry mass) of collector macroinvertebrates of Sycamore Creek, Arizona, estimated by the size-frequency method, is 135 g m-2. yr-'. This high rate of production is attributed to a long growing season, continuous reproduction, rapid life cycles of major taxa, and small size at maturity. Assimilation efficiency for selected collector taxa is estimated to be 7-14% and gross growth efficiency 2-11%. At mean standing stock (3 g/m2) collectors ingest 4.2 times their body mass per day. Ingestion exceeds gross primary production, dictating both fecal reingestion and rapid turnover of fine particulate organic matter in this desert stream. The Effect of Processing of Corn Silage with Schizophyllum Commune on Chemical Composition, Ruminal Degradability and in Vitro Gas Production
Extended Abstract Introduction and Objective: To overcome the problems caused by animal feed shortages, efforts are made to increase the availability of nutrients and their digestibility, such as improving the nutritional value of forage plants through biological processing. Schizophyllum commune is an edible fungus of the basidiomycete’s family that has been used for biological processing of ...
متن کاملNitrification in the hyporheic zone of a desert stream ecosystem
Nitrification in the hyporheic zone of Sycamore Creek, a Sonoran Desert stream, was examined, focusing on the association between respiration and nitrate production. Subsurface respiration in Sycamore Creek is highest in regions of hydrologic downwelling where organic matter derived from the stream surface is transported into the hyporheic zone. Similarly, nitrification was closely related to h...

Current study monitored Electerical Conductivity (EC) as soil salinity index and Organic Matter (OM) in the area of Harat in Yazd, Iran, through remote sensing technology with high spatial and spectral resolution. The images were selected from IRS, LISS III satellites between the years 2008 and 2012. After preprocessing and analyzing the images, the relationship between parameters of (EC) an...
متن کاملStream invertebrate productivity linked to forest subsidies: 37 stream-years of reference and experimental data.
Riparian habitats provide detrital subsidies of varying quantities and qualities to recipient ecosystems. We used long-term data from three reference streams (covering 24 stream-years) and 13-year whole-stream organic matter manipulations to investigate the influence of terrestrial detrital quantity and quality on benthic invertebrate community structure, abundance, biomass, and secondary produ...
متن کاملTerrestrial litter inputs as determinants of food quality of organic matter in a forest stream
Inputs of leaf litter and other organic matter from the catchment exceed autochthonous production and provide an important food ,resource in most streams (WEBSTER & MEYER 1997, ANDERSON & SEDElL 1979). An experimental long-term exclusion of terrestrial litter inputs to a forested headwater stream (WALLACE et al. 1997) provided an opportunity to determine if the food quality of organic matter wo...
